10 Questions to Ask Before Booking Your Bridal Hair and Makeup Artist

Wedding Tips

Choosing the right bridal hair and makeup artist is about so much more than finding a beautiful portfolio. The right person should understand your vision, personalise your look and make the entire experience feel calm, clear and considered. Before you book, these are the questions worth asking.

YOU’RE CHOOSING MORE THAN A BEAUTIFUL PORTFOLIO

Finding a bridal artist often starts the same way: you open Instagram, save a few beautiful photos and begin comparing portfolios.

That’s a sensible place to start. But it shouldn’t be where the decision ends.

Your artist will be with you during a personal, emotional and very busy part of the wedding day. You need to love their work, of course. You also need to trust their communication, organisation and ability to stay calm when the room gets lively.

Choosing the right bridal hair and makeup artist should leave you feeling informed, not overwhelmed. You deserve to understand what you’re booking, why certain recommendations are being made and what the experience will look like from your first enquiry to the wedding morning. That clarity is an important part of the experience I create at Aligned by Thi.

These ten questions will help you look beyond follower counts, one perfect photograph and a starting price. There’s no single artist who is right for every bride. The goal is to find the person whose work, process and personality feel right for you.

QUESTION 1: HOW WOULD YOU PERSONALISE THIS LOOK FOR ME?

You may already have an inspiration photo you love. Ask the artist how they would make it work for you.

A thoughtful answer should consider your face and eye shape, skin tone, skin type, hair length, density and texture. It should also take your dress, veil, personal style and comfort level into account.

For example, the hairstyle may need more length or fullness than your natural hair provides. The eye makeup may need a different placement to create the same lifted feeling on your eye shape. A soft-glam image may need to be adjusted if you rarely wear makeup and want to feel especially natural.

Personalisation isn’t about talking you out of the look you love. It’s about understanding what you love and finding the best way to translate it.

If the artist can explain how they’ll adapt the inspiration rather than simply promise to copy it, you’re already learning something important about their approach.

QUESTION 2: WHY DO YOU RECOMMEND THIS LOOK FOR ME?

This is the question I wish more brides would ask.

A good artist can create a beautiful look. A great artist can also explain why a particular choice makes sense for you.

If they recommend one hairstyle over another, ask why. Will it hold well with your hair type? Does the placement complement your face? Will extensions help achieve the fullness in your reference?

The same applies to makeup. Why are they suggesting a particular finish, lash or level of definition? How will it work with your features and the way you like to see yourself?

There should be intention behind the recommendations.

You’re not questioning the artist’s expertise by asking. You’re giving them an opportunity to share it. When you understand the reasoning, you can make the decision together rather than feeling as though the look has been chosen for you.

QUESTION 3: IS THE QUALITY CONSISTENT ACROSS THE WHOLE PORTFOLIO?

It’s easy to fall in love with one image on Instagram. Before you book, take a little time to look at the artist’s work as a whole.

Do the hair and makeup look consistently polished across different weddings? Can you see close-ups and wider photographs? Are hairstyles shown from more than one angle? Does the work still look beautiful outside perfect studio lighting?

Look for brides whose features feel relevant to you. That might mean a similar skin tone, eye shape, hair texture, hair colour or length. You don’t need to find somebody who looks exactly like you, but it can help you picture how the artist’s style may translate.

Also ask yourself a very simple question: can you imagine yourself in this portfolio?

An artist can be exceptionally talented and still not be the right aesthetic fit. Consistency gives you a much clearer picture of what they naturally create than one standout post ever could.

QUESTION 4: HAVE YOU WORKED WITH SKIN, HAIR AND FEATURES LIKE MINE?

Every face, skin type and head of hair brings something different to the appointment.

If you have a particular eye shape, skin concern or hair texture, ask how the artist approaches it. If your skin is dry, oily or sensitive, let them know. And if your hair is very fine, highly textured or especially dense, ask what preparation and techniques may be helpful.

You can also ask to see relevant examples from their portfolio. The point isn’t to test the artist or expect an identical before-and-after. It’s to understand whether they can adapt their skills rather than repeat the same formula.

My soft-glam approach draws on Western and Asian-inspired techniques. This gives me a broader range of methods to choose from when I’m working with different features.

Whatever artist you’re considering, listen for an answer that feels specific. “Yes, I work with everyone” is reassuring, but an explanation of how they adjust their approach tells you much more.

QUESTION 5: WHAT’S INCLUDED, AND WHAT MIGHT COST EXTRA?

Before you compare quotes, make sure you’re comparing the same experience.

Ask whether the package includes hair, makeup or both. Is a bridal preview included? Are false lashes part of the makeup service? What happens if your chosen hairstyle needs extensions? Can the artist accommodate your bridal party?

Then ask about costs that may sit outside the starting price. Depending on the wedding, these could include travel, parking, accommodation, an early start, extra artists, touch-up support or a hairstyle change.

Additional costs aren’t automatically a red flag. A wedding in regional WA with an early ceremony will naturally involve different logistics from a local Perth booking.

What matters is transparency. You should understand the likely total investment, what secures the date and when payments are due before you commit.

A clear quote gives you confidence. A vague quote leaves you wondering what may appear later.

QUESTION 6: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I SAY YES?

A good booking process should make the next steps feel easier.

Ask what happens after the initial enquiry. What information does the artist need? When will you receive a quote? Which documents need to be completed? What officially secures the date?

Take time to read the terms and conditions. They should explain the agreed services, payment expectations and relevant policies in clear language. If something doesn’t make sense, ask.

It’s also helpful to know how communication works after booking. When will you discuss the timeline? Will you receive preparation advice? How should you submit any changes? When will the final details be confirmed?

Professional systems don’t have to feel cold. In fact, a clear process can be one of the most reassuring parts of the experience because you always know what happens next.

QUESTION 7: DO YOU OFFER A BRIDAL PREVIEW?

A bridal preview gives you and your artist time to test, discuss and refine the look before the wedding day.

Ask when they recommend scheduling it and what you should bring. By then, it’s helpful to have information about your dress, veil, jewellery and accessories, along with a small collection of inspiration photos.

More importantly, ask how feedback works during the appointment.

Your bridal preview should feel collaborative, not like a pass-or-fail reveal. Throughout the appointment, you’ll be able to see the look developing, share your thoughts and make adjustments with me.

You should feel comfortable saying that you’d like a little less definition, more softness around the face or a change in the hairstyle. The appointment is there to create clarity and confidence.

By the end, you should understand the agreed direction and know how to prepare for the wedding day.

QUESTION 8: WHO PLANS THE WEDDING-MORNING TIMELINE?

Beautiful work needs enough time.

Ask how the artist plans the schedule, especially if several people need hair and makeup. Who works backwards from the ready time? How much time is allowed for the bride? Will another artist be needed for a larger group?

I generally allow around two and a half to three hours for your hair and makeup, depending on the look. I also prefer to finish with a comfortable buffer rather than at the exact moment you need to leave.

That buffer matters. It creates time for final checks, getting dressed, veil placement, photographs and all the little moments nobody wants to rush.

Your artist also needs to work smoothly with photographers, videographers and other suppliers. A great result isn’t much comfort if the morning has felt frantic.

Ask enough questions to understand whether the proposed schedule feels realistic, not simply optimistic.

QUESTION 9: HOW DO YOU PLAN FOR WEATHER, WEAR AND PHOTOGRAPHY?

Perth weather can bring heat, wind and plenty of bright light, so it’s worth asking how the artist plans for the conditions.

Talk about your skin type, hair texture, venue and season. Ask how they choose products and techniques for longevity, and how the look will translate between indoor light, sunlight and flash photography.

No responsible artist should promise that every hair or makeup detail will remain completely unchanged through weather, tears, movement and hours of celebrating. What they can do is prepare carefully, set realistic expectations and explain your options.

Ask whether you’ll receive preparation guidance or touch-up advice. If you want ongoing support, find out whether a touch-up or on-location service is available and what it includes.

A thoughtful answer should sound like planning, not a guarantee that ignores real-life conditions.

QUESTION 10: DO I FEEL COMFORTABLE TALKING TO THIS PERSON?

This question is just as important as the technical ones.

You may spend several hours with your artist during a morning that feels exciting, emotional and occasionally overwhelming. You should feel comfortable asking questions, sharing a concern and requesting an adjustment.

Notice how the artist communicates. Do they listen before recommending? Do they explain what’s included? Are they honest when an inspiration photo may need adapting? Do they welcome questions without making you feel difficult?

An artist who says yes to everything isn’t necessarily listening. Sometimes good guidance means explaining why another option may work better.

I believe a great bridal artist brings calm, positive energy into the room. They work well with other suppliers, stay composed when the morning becomes busy and help the bride feel supported.

Trust how you feel during the conversation. You should come away feeling clearer, more confident and comfortable about the person who may be beside you on the wedding morning.

A QUICK CHECK BEFORE YOU BOOK

Before making your decision, look at the whole picture.

Do you genuinely connect with the artist’s style? Is their portfolio consistent? Can they explain how they’ll personalise the look? Are the package, additional costs and terms clear? Does the booking process feel organised? Is the bridal preview collaborative? Is the timeline realistic? Do you feel heard?

Price matters, but it isn’t the only part of the investment. You’re also choosing expertise, preparation, communication and peace of mind.

You don’t need an artist to give the answer you expected every time. You need them to be clear, thoughtful and aligned with the experience you value.

THE RIGHT ARTIST SHOULD MAKE THE DECISION FEEL CLEARER

Choosing your bridal artist should leave you feeling excited, not uncertain.

The right person will combine technical skill with listening, planning and honest guidance. They’ll help you understand what’s possible, what to expect and how the look can become genuinely yours.

For brides searching for a bridal makeup artist in Perth, I offer a personalised, relationship-focused experience built around thoughtful communication and timeless artistry.

If that sounds like the kind of support you want for your wedding morning, the next step is simply to begin the conversation.
